ACCOMPLISHMENTS  

 Raesha Cartagena (New York, NY) – was presented with a Puerto Rican Women Legacy Award by the Comité Noviembre on March 26, as President of the Puerto Rican Institute for the Development of the Arts (PRIDA), Cultural Advocate and Puerto Rican Arts Community Leader.

 Dalilah Garcia (Brownsville, TX) -- On February 25, 2026, Dalilah had the distinct honor of making history as the first Spanish-language Virtual Networking Leader for FemCity. For 16 years, this international membership-based organization has exclusively operated in English. As President of FemCity Brownsville and a proud community founder, she led the organization’s first-ever virtual networking session conducted entirely in Spanish.  This milestone expanded accessibility and inclusivity while advancing FemCity’s mission to support and empower ambitious women in business through authentic connections, collaboration over competition, and the cultivation of meaningful professional and personal growth worldwide.

Karina Martinez (Pflugerville, TX) -- Her high-fashion clothing website is live! www.thelorenza.com.

 Elsa Prado (Oak Lawn, IL) -- Will be receiving an award for Women’s Day from International Radio and LULAC.

 Milly Silencio (Carteret, NJ) – On March 7, Milly was a Co-Presenter with Samuel Ocasio Jr. at Princeton Theological Seminary on “Technological Collective Connection through Memes: Religious Identity, Play, and Imagination of Latinos.”  Last November, she was Co-Presenter with Comadre Lizanne Espina at American Association of Religion/Society of Biblical Literature on the “Church’s Call of Solidarity with Migrant Women contending Injustices of The U.S. Immigration System.”

ACCOMPLISHMENTS 

Amina Ali (New York, NY) – was accepted into the Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing (Fiction) program at the City College of New York (CCNY), for Fall 2025. 

Andrea Arroyo (New York, NY) – is thrilled to share that her exhibition featuring 80 artworks from “Imaginations: Art as Solidarity” is on view at St Just Le Martel, France. Also, her exhibition in New York “Viva la Vida”, inspired by the Mexican Day of the Dead, opens on October 25 at the Sugar Hill Museum in Manhattan. 

Carmen L. Bonilla (Mayaguez, Puerto Rico) – is currently developing an online course to help working adults further develop their interpersonal communication skills in the workplace. It will be part of a larger course to help with workforce and career readiness. Carmen provides job seekers all over the US with coaching, helping them with resumes, interview preparation, and everything related to job search. Two of her job seekers landed their next roles recently. 

Lynette Correa-Velez (Chicago, IL) – is A.I. Founder/CEO of the Pagame Project w/RitaAI tech start-up, and created the inaugural "Latinas in A.I. & Business Panel" & co-presented at the annual 2025 Chicago Latina Expo on October 4. Lynette was awarded the "2025 Empowering Latinas Award" by United Latinas National during the 2025 HHM United Latinas Virtual Conference in Oct 2025. She was 1/3 awardees in the U.S. which had over 400 nominations nationally. She was also quoted in Forbes Magazine for #LatinaEqualPayDay on 10/8/2025! Julieta Corpus (Donna, TX) – was named First Poet Laureate of Donna, Texas. 

Dori Contreras (San Antonio, TX) – was presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Judicial Section of the State Bar of Texas (Sept 3) and the Hidalgo County Bar Association (May 22). 

Eris Garriga (Brooklyn, NY) – will be participating in a "Congreso Aguadillano de Historia" on October 23rd and 24th at the University of Puerto Rico, Aguadilla Campus (CORA). Her topic is Cultura Culinaria Aguadillana (Culinary Culture of Aguadilla). This is as part of the 250th year anniversary of the foundation of Aguadilla. 

Karina Martinez (Austin, TX) – participated as a designer in the Austin Woman Magazine and the ACC Fashion Incubator Fashion Show at Macy's on September 18th. 

Dora Elias McAllsister (Oak Park, Chicago, IL) – On September 9, Dora finished a 100K (62 miles) walk on the Camino de Santiago (the way of St. James), an ancient pilgrimage route across Spain. Bravo!

Raquel V. Reyes (Miami, FL) – On October 1st, 2025, Raquel became the first Latina to be president of Sisters in Crime. Sisters in Crime was founded in 1986 to promote the ongoing advancement, recognition and professional development of women crime writers. 

Dr. Donna San Miguel (San Marcos, CA) – was appointed President of Mana de North County San Diego.

COMADRE AUTHORS 

Maritere Bellas (Manhattan Beach, CA) – has a new book out, TIO RICKY DOESN’T SPEAK ENGLISH / TIO RICKY NO HABLA INGLES, from Lil’ Libros. The book is a bilingual children’s book/ middle grade. 

Flor Chaidez (Los Angeles, CA) – Flor’s book, THE TELEMENTAL HEALTH WORKBOOK, was published by Kendall Hunt Publishing, and available in English and Spanish. The book offers telemental health therapists a collection of engaging and innovative strategies for working with children and adolescents. 

Nylda Dieppa (Orlando, FL) – Her poetic chapbook, CRUMBS: POEMS ON THE JOURNEY FROM RATIONED TO REPLETE, has qualified as a finalist in the Royal Palm Literary Award competition.

Welcome 2025!   We open the new year with a heartfelt Congratulations to the following Comadres on their Accomplishments, and to Comadre Authors on their new books.   

 

 

 

ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Vibiana Aparicio-Chamberlin (Pasadena, CA) -- Received the coveted PEN Nomination for her poem, The Many Faces of La Llorona, published in the Altadena Poetry Anthology Review 2024. I also read Spanish translations from her book, Mi Amor (September 2024) at Los Libros in Lincoln Heights. I recited Nopal, Muse, Medicine and Sustenance from my thrice winning International Latino Book awarded Chicana On Fire (December 2024) at the Xicana Exhibit, El Camino College.  AND!  She exhibited portraits (August-December 2024) at The CASA 0101 Art Gallery and an altar dedicated to recently deceased Gloria Molina, First Latina elected to the CA assembly.

 

Andrea Arroyo (New York, NY) – Was a guest at art conferences and exhibitions in Italy and France last year. Her solo exhibition "Faces & Façades" at the Morris-Jumel Mansion Museum in Manhattan (https://morrisjumel.org/exhibitions/faces-facades/) was featured in the NY Amsterdam News and is on view through March 23, 2025. Julieta Corpus (Weslaco, TX) – Her book, Of Love And Departures/ De Amor Y Despedidas, is a bilingual poetry book available through Amazon. It is a collection of poems in English and in Spanish about love and loss and grief written during and after the death of her late husband Arturo Saldana, who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2014 and passed away in March 2016.

 

Yanelba Ferreira (Bronx, NY) – Happy to announce her recent acting roles!  (1.) Performed as Jury Foreperson (co-star role) in Law & Order, Season 23, Episode 4 which aired on February 8, 2024.  (2.)  Performed as Rosa Castillo (supporting role) in the short film “Hello Brooklyn!” directed by Dustin Prestige, premiered at Stuart Cinema in Brooklyn, NY on October 8, 2024 and is also available for viewing on YouTube: https://youtu.be/_wlJzVUmTU0.  (3.) Performed as Mami (supporting role) in the short film “Niña Linda” directed by Ashley Morales, premiered at Rider University on December 8, 2024. Film is currently not available for viewing online as it is being submitted to film festivals.

 

Lourdes Ortiz (North Attleboro & Massachusetts) -- Graduates with an MBA in May 2025. She has three small children – 6, 4 and 1.  She works a full-time job; cares for her three kids; and stays up many late nights, sometimes ‘til 3am, studying. Lourdes is very happy and very proud of herself.  [We are too!]

 

Mirtha Perez (Cedar Park, TX) -- The week before Christmas, Mirtha and her daughter went to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to kick off her gymnastics season with Acrotex Cedar Park.  She competed in the Puerto Rico Classic and got 1st in Bars, 3rd in Beam and 3rd All Around. She qualified for the Laurie Hernandez Champions Challenge the next day where she got 5th place All Around, and Laurie was there to give some pep talks to the gymnasts.  It was an amazing experience for both!

 

Susana Sandoval (Denver /Chicago/Los Angeles) – Won a Scholarship for her annual grantsmanship training (recertification).

 

Leonor Vargas (Austin, TX) -- This year, Wisdom En Familias LLC, was honored to collaborate with the Community Advancement Network to design and lead outreach for the bilingual mobile Mental Health Outreach Toolkit (Pathways to Mental Health Healing). This initiative was created to uplift and serve Spanish-speaking communities, addressing the urgent need for accessible mental health resources. With the steadfast support of our incredible partners—Southwest Key Programs, NAMI, our advisory group, and funders—we worked passionately to empower individuals and families. Through this effort, Wisdom En Familias delivered 53 presentations and reached 725 participants, offering knowledge, tools, and hope for healing.  (From Leonor: Mil gracias to everyone who contributed to this transformative work. Anjanette Delgado (Florida) -- published a book this month with a small independent publisher in Puerto Rico. It's called El sexilio, mostly in Spanish, and talks about us women and how sometimes we are forced to exile because of the violence against the feminine. 

 

 

JANUARY 2025

 

Dr. Melba Salazar-Lucio (San Antonio, TX) – her memoir, WHERE I AM FROM, will be published by Storyworth.

 

Las Comadres Para Las Americas (Austin, TX) – published COOKING WITH LAS COMADRES cookbook.  60 Comadres contributed 130+ recipes from main dishes to soups to pastelones to surrollitos to carne guisada to flan to sangria to coquito.  This cookbook is a fundraiser for Las Comadres, all proceeds go to fund 2025 programs.  Order your copy here.

Ileana Araguti (Beaumont, CA) – The Spanish version of her novel SHATTERED PARADISE is now available, PARAISO DESTROZADO.  Ileana is working on new novels and is looking for literary representation.

Andrea Arroyo (New York, NY) – Returned from exhibitions in Italy and France, and she invites Comadres to join her for the opening of her next solo show in NYC, "Faces & Façades," featuring a new series of paintings inspired by the women and architecture of Northern Manhattan. Diana Diaz (Hackensack, NJ) – After an impressive 25-year tenure of a prominent Bankruptcy Law Firm, serving as the Chief Operating Officer for the last 10- years, Diana took a bold step forward and resigned to pursue her passion for helping others. Shortly after, she founded her own Legal Research Bankruptcy Consultant Firm, and she is pursuing her dream of becoming an attorney, laying the foundation for her future law firm. Reflecting on her journey, Diana realized that fear was once her greatest adversary, holding her back from seizing opportunities. However, she has now conquered that fear, emerging more confident and determined than ever to continue her mission of uplifting the Hispanic community. This journey is not just a professional milestone; it’s a profound personal transformation that inspires her to forge ahead and make a lasting difference.

Nylda Dieppa (Orlando, FL) – Her book, ALBORADA /DAWN: A Cross-Cultural Memoir in Poetry has received an Honorable Mention award from the International Latino Book Awards in the Juan Felipe Herrera Best Poetry Book Award category. Nylda is proud to be in the company of Emanuel Xavier, one of three finalists in the same category and author of LOVE(LY) CHILD.  She interviewed him for the Las Comadres Book Club recently.

Laura Esparza (Austin, TX) – After retiring in March 2024, Laura founded a new foundation called A3, devoted to raising and distributing funding to individual artists, musicians, performers and other arts related contractors who offer their work to the Austin public for free.

Eris Garriga (New York, NY) – Has a new Spanish language book coming soon, AGUADILLA EN IMAGENES Y VERSOS.

Ana Gonzalez, OP (Boston, MA) – Is rocking Graduate School at Boston College and on track to graduate with her MA in Theology and Ministry with an emphasis in Latino Pastoral Ministry.

Raquel “Rachel” Moran Nevarez (Pharr, TX) – Won a Goodwill Scholarship from the Texas Association Court Administration (TACA) for continuing in Certification of Court Administration in the State of Texas for Certified Court Management.

Mireya Perez-Bustillo (Brooklyn, NY) -- Her poem, Going to the Mammos, was published in Brownstone Poets 2024 Anthology.

Mirta Rinaldi (Forest Hills, NY) – The company she works for, League of Kitchens, is publishing a cookbook that showcases her recipes, along with the recipes of her peers. We are proud and excited to introduce this collaborative book that allows us to share a little bit of our culture and favorite family recipes. We will have a book tour through the end of the year with a big launch event at the Invisible Dog Art Gallery in Cobble Hill on November 13th, 7pm, here in NYC. All Comadres and friends are welcomed to celebrate our book and taste eight of our instructors’ food!

 Julie Anna Alvarez Rivera (NY) – became the Co-Chair of NALP's Hispanic/Latinx Affinity Group during the April 16 - 19 Annual Education Conference in Boston and was also appointed to serve on NALP's new President's Task Force on Change Management. (NALP is the National Association for Law Placement.) Since end of October, Julie Anna has been serving as a Career Specialist with the Graduate Professional Development Program at Fordham Law School's International and Non-J.D. Programs department.

 Andrea Arroyo (NY) – will be honored by The New York Women's Foundation at the Celebrating Women® Breakfast, on May 8 at the New York Marriott Marquis. Her fellow honorees include Cynthia Nixon, S.  Aida Berduo Berry (CA) – is proud to announce that she is the new Vice-President Advisory Services-Civil Rights Lead, of WSP USA, Inc.

 Judith A. Canales (TX) – is graduating from Our Lady of the Lake University in San Antonio, Texas with a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies this week. Dr. Canales has served in executive leadership roles in two presidential administrations, President Barack Obama and President Bill Clinton.

 Norma Elia Cantú (TX) – received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Scholarship to deliver talks at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and Universidad Alcalá de Henares. While in Spain, she also read from her work at ManaKiSanti a cultural center in Villoria de Obrigo and Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.

 Claudia de Vasco (TX) – is proud to announce that she is the new Managing Director of Miller Theatre Advisory Board (Miller Outdoor Theatre).  She is the 1st Latina Executive leader in the institutions 100-year history.  

 Nylda Dieppa (FL) –has been accepted to study poetry at the American University in Paris this summer. A dream comes true!

 Dr. Charley Ferrer (FL) – is joyous over the success of her first Cinco de Mayo Weekend Health Expo at Hernando County Parks & Recreation in Brooksville. There were health vans offering free medical services, entertainment, painting parties, exhibitors, vendors, authors, and a Breast Cancer Mermaid Art Project Exhibition.  Dahlma Llanos-Figueroa (NY) – her second novel, A Woman of Endurance (Spanish-language edition, INDÓMITA) was selected by Centro del Libro in San Juan, to represent Puerto Rico in the Library of Congress Great Reads from Great Places 2024 program. This annual initiative highlights a fiction book that represents the heritage of Puerto Rico and will be part of the Puerto Rico exhibition table during the National Book Festival in Washington DC, which will be held on August 24, 2024.

 Elisa O’Callaghan (TX) – is proud to announce that after a year-long intensive training, she is now a Docent at the Dallas Museum of Art. If you are in the area, she invites you to stop by an ask for a tour from any one of our Docents including myself that will elevate your art experience and ignite your passion for the art world. My first tour combines the rich and vibrant world of Meso-American art, spinning from the ancient Mayan civilization to the Mexican muralist movement, and showcasing the works of contemporary Latin American Artists.

 Karina H. Martinez (TX) – last month, Fashion Designer Karina participated in Austin’s Fashion Week for the second time and showed off her fashions.

 Susana Sandoval (IL/CO/NY) – was chosen as one of 64 delegates for the 2024 Greenlatinos National Summit in Puerto Rico.

 Raquel V. Reyes (FL) – is excited to announce that her mystery novel, MANGO, MAMBO AND MURDER, is in production with Amazon/MGM to become "Miami Spice."  

            From the Variety article: Gato Grande, an Amazon MGM Studios company, has unveiled the next project from its recently launched English-language division: mystery satire “Miami Spice.” Cuban-American showrunner Art Alamo, best known for his work on “Law & Order,” will be writing and producing “Miami Spice,” which is based on the novel “Mango, Mambo and Murder” from author Raquel V. Reyes’ lauded Caribbean Kitchen Mystery book series. “Miami Spice” revolves around Cuban-American chef Miriam Quiñonez, who, after a career-ending scandal in New York, moves back to Miami with her husband and 5-year-old son. She’s keen for a fresh start but gets caught up in a murder mystery that rocks her rich, mostly white neighborhood. Congratulations to the following Comadres on their Accomplishments.   

Dr. Esmeralda Adame (TX) -- was honored by the Hispanic Women Network of Texas with a Hispanic Women Making History Award.

Andrea Arroyo (NY) -- is thrilled to share that one of her artworks is featured in a publication highlighting the importance of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, developed by the United Nations Human Rights Office and launched at the Human Rights Council in Geneva. The artwork is part of her series #ArtAsSolidarity, which is published widely, including in her book "ImagiNATIONS: Art as Solidarity."

Moni Avila (TX) -- Celebrated her 2nd anniversary at Metro Health.  Moni was selected and is a semi-finalist for the next cohort of Culture of Health Leadership Institute for Racial Healing and has been nominated for a 2024 Healthy Communities Fellowship.

Rose Costas Dietrich (TX) -- Celebrated five years working as a caregiver for Visiting Angels. Rose has helped take care of many elderly clients including veterans in there home.

Estella Gonzalez (AZ) -- is pleased to announce that The Texas Institute of Letters has recognized her  novel, HUIZACHE WOMEN, as a finalist for the Jesse H. Jones Award for Best Book of Fiction.

LAS COMADRES CELEBRATE ITS MEMBERS' ACCOMPLISHMENTS -- JANUARY 2024

 

 

Las Comadres Para Las Americas Congratulates the following Comadres on a job well done! 

 

Itiel Adams (TX) –In 2020 was the Latin Marketing Media Strategist for the Democratic National Convention (DNC). DNC candidate (President J Biden) went on to win the presidency with the Latin people vote, without needing to win the traditional “swing” states.

 Amina Susi Ali (NY) –My short story, Sunset Park, is published in the Winter 2024 issue of LatineLit.com magazine.

 Vibiana Aparicio-Chamberlin (CA) –My poetry-art book, CHICANA ON FIRE: Ignited by the 1970s East L.A. Chicano Protest Movement won awards for Poetry and for best video presentation of poems. My granddaughter Ava Chamberlin won a silver award for her video filming, directing and editing of my reading and my presentation of my antiwar poems and paintings. The event was sponsored by the International Latino Book Awards this past October 2023. What an honor!

 Iris V Fernandez (NY) –Published debut memoir: PERSEVERANCE: The Bridge to a Latina Mother's Dream with RMP Studio on 25 January 2024 on Amazon.

 Eris Garriga (NY) –In October 2023, Chef Enrique Piñeiro interviewed and invited me to demonstrate how to prepare “Arepitas de Espinaca” (Spinach fritter) on his program in WAPA-TV in Puerto Rico. 

In December, I was interviewed by a reporter in the Brooklyn local newspaper Canarsie Courier.  The interview appeared on January 4^th, titled “Local Author Shares Her Family’s Most Loved Puerto Rican Recipes.” And on January 5^th, I was one of the Honorary Madrinas at the 47^th Annual Three Kings Day Parade at El Museo del Barrio in NYC.  I also received a Comptroller of the City of NY Certificate of Recognition, along with a glass trophy from El Museo. 

 Gabriela Kane Guardia (TX) –As of December 2023, I’ve been appointed as the new Executive Director of Latinitas by its Board of Directors, following an extensive executive search.

 Janie Jaramillo (TX) –I earned my hypnotherapy certificate so I can include this modality in my coaching practice.

 Veronica M. Joloy (IL) –was promoted to Assistant Plant Manager in January.

 Nancy Navarro (TX) –is excited to announce the upcoming publication of our historical book, "The Merchant of Venus: The Life of Walter Thornton," on Kickstarter (crowdfunding). We are two sisters born and raised in Mexico to our Mexican mother and American father. After our father passed away, we discovered that he was super famous and a pioneer in the beauty, modeling, and advertising industries. Monica Peña (TX) --Received a promotion from Marketing Manager to Community Relations Director at the non-profit, Economic Growth Business Incubator after 6+ years of service. Excited for the impact that we will continue to expand at the small business incubator.

Mireya Perez-Bustillo (NY) –My poem "Bubbling' was published in The Brownstone Poets 2023 Anthology; I was one of 150 invited poets to read on Jan 1 The Alternative at Westbeth in NYC.

Maritere R. Bellas (CA) -- as of Jan 2024, her bilingual children’s book, I have a secret/ Tengo un secreto, now three years old last December, will be available in hardcover format!  Grateful to 1010 Publishing!

Dr. Damary Bonilla-Rodriguez (NY) -- Published new book titled Modern Marianismo: Its Relevance and the Connection to Impostor Syndrome and Perfectionism", which is available for pre-sale on her website: drbonilla-rodriguez.godaddysites.com/shop.  She also won the Latino Diamante, Comunidad Diamante Award from ExpoFE USA.

 Lynette Correa-Velez (IL) -- completed her year-one work anniversary as the Founding Director of Tech Launchpad at Kennedy-King College which is 1/7 City (Community) Colleges of Chicago!

 Eris Garriga (NY) – was named one of 2024’s Honorary Madrinas for El Museo del Barrio’s Three Kings Day Parade.  Eris offers Puerto Rican cookbooks in English and Spanish, homestyle cooking and vegetarian.  Visit her at eriskitchen.net.

 Pearl Garza Fracchia (TX) -- was elected Vice Chair of the Texas Health Resources Community Leadership Council for 2024. One area of the Council’s mission is to provide grants to nonprofits in the area of mental health to ensure a healthy future for North Texans.

Angélica Hendrix (CA) -- became a state board licensed marriage and family therapist and opened a private practice, which is thriving, thankfully.

 Mireya Perez-Bustillo (NY) – was an invited poet at Alternative New Year’s Spoken Word and Performance Extravaganza on January 1 at Westbeth, Greenwich Village.

 Rima Taylor (TN) – got a promotion and ran her first marathon ever!
